Houston is close to Mexico also. I think I just need to recalibrate as to what is inexpensive and expensive in today's market. Looking at the $70 tab, I see the bio-green drink I buy costs a whole $8. I have a juicerator and could probably make that goop myself. If [...]

I must concede, I'm luckier than most. Food prices in Colorado are relatively low — we're close enough to Mexico and California for good produce, close enough to the midwest for beef and grains, and we grow a lot here in state. The commissary helps a ton for staples. And the local grocers are playing [...]

Food has gotten very expensive. I went to the market this morning with a list from the wife. Just a few items for our normally healthy eating for just the two of us. $70!

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Thanks partly to the economy, but mostly just because I'm a dork, I started calculating the cost per serving of some of our meals. Unfortunately, I usually do this in the middle of supper with a beer in hand, so I need to start from scratch [...]

ADVENTURE TRAVEL Entry for 2/8/10
Here I am, still in Houston. Delayed due to the rescheduling of a client engagement, and also delayed due to the flu. I’ve also got a motorcycle ride planned down into Mexico that has also been delayed.
I am not sure what Adventure Traveling really means to everybody, but lots of people [...]

Yes, I said the counter-argument to cost would be that it's about rights. I thought I was pretty clear – this is a cost-benefit question for DoD and Congress.
Your argument was about readiness, which my rebuttal said was unfounded.
As for the Brits & Aussies, we clearly have different cultural [...]

All due respect, but I was responding to your post:
"At this point I imagine you’re all saying, c’mon Herndog, this is about RIGHTS, not cost."
Your entire rebuttal suggested that MY argument was about rights. Which it's not.I guess we will just have to agree to disagree about latrine facilities and billeting.
As a [...] -

Brenda, all due respect but the BS flag is up. I said it's about cost, NOT rights. My personal opinion is that the decision to integrate women in the military was a good one. At this point, we don’t make “concessions” for women. Our force is stronger with them, especially now [...]

Here's the thing – and many will disagree – but I firmly believe that we separate showers and toilets because of cultural norms. To wit, co-ed public baths in other parts of the world. Co-ed bathrooms at colleges. These things happen with no problems.
Men are acculturated to shower alongside men, and women with women. [...] -

@Brenda – You know I'm with you on this one and I bring no ridiculous right-wing misconceptions into this debate but I also know that it's a spurious argument to point out how harmonious something was in the past because someone was unaware. True, a persona's orientation will have zero physical effect on anyone. But [...]

Brad, you raise some interesting points which Congress and DoD will have to wrestle with.
But I disagree – it's not a matter of rights, it's a matter of readiness.
Do we "make concessions" for women to serve as a matter of equality, or because our force is stronger with them?
I think our force [...] -

OK, stay with me people…time for the Herndog to weigh in with my two cents. I’ll throw out my argument and be open to all counterpoints. I’m no longer in the Army or with the US Government, but I’ll give the disclaimer that these are my own views.

Me three.
We shouldn't compromise military readiness, though – I agree with that. However, knowing so many active-duty and former LGBT officers, I think that DADT compromises readiness, not the other way 'round.
1. We're losing Soldiers we need – most gays & lesbians quit the military way before theywant to, because they're sick of [...] -

Okay…I don't disagree – the only argument left that I can think of would be that allowing them to serve would take away from US security (I don't think it would btw but no one can know for sure) which leads me to Ben Franklin: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a [...]

Re “they are not forced to lie.” Does anyone where you work know that you’re married? Dating? What do you talk about at lunch? Ever mention your family?

3 & your final point. Not sure how this isn't obvious -> Certainly sexuality is not relevant. But we have no such freedom from "knowing". The reason we don't want anyone telling is because of the (misguided) notion that knowing that certain peers/soldiers were not [...] -

1. I can't comment on Dan's abilities as an officer, but I would suggest that if you "assess that he was a poor officer" you ought to throw us a bone and back it up with at least one supporting fact (I'm not saying there aren't any)

NPR aired a story this week on the Army's policy about gays in the Service; Stephen Colbert themed his show one night this week on it also (which was hilarious btw). Admiral Mullen believes that the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy is wrong. I don't know what the right answer is but I [...]

Steve,
I didn’t think about you automatically grouping the zip codes. I figured it would be a ’joining’ function, like LinkedIn, but the automatic function would be nice. Just don’t know how you would do it, unless there is a way to automatically link someone with all zips within 50-100 miles of their own. [...]
